A Letter from Principal
Welcome to Millikin Basics+ School!
Our school is open to all kids in the Unified School District of Santa Clara. The program is based and emphasized on basic academic skills, and it is focused on children's study habits establishment. Millikin Basics+ Elementary School maintains high standards of behavior, responsibility and productivity; and its educational program involves the responsibility of parents for developing their children's individual growth. This school is emphasized on achieving great and, what is more, proficient academic skills.
Our Goals, Objectives and Philosophy
They have been approved by the Board of Education in the United School District of Santa Clara in 1976; all goals, objectives and philosophy of the Millikin Basics+ Program follow Code #58500 of California State Education and all general objectives of #6000 from SCUSD Policy.
GOALS
All goals of the Millikin Basics+ School are based on the following belief: as a rule, children don't usually have any experience to know and understand what they need to find out to become responsible and productive citizens of our society. Taking this statement into consideration, we seek to achieve the goals which are the following:
-
* To teach the basic fundamentals of education
They include reading, writing, spelling, grammar, mathematics, handwriting, as well as health, science and social studies.
-
* To provide good educational environment
Interruptions are minimized here. All students are expected to work on time, properly and neatly. All activities in classrooms are initiated and directed by teachers, and good discipline is always enforced. -
* To give consistent instructions
The basis for study at Millikin Basics+ Elementary School is Basic and Supplementary Texts of California State. They are used to teach social studies, language arts, reading, science and mathematics. We follow all state standards in K-5 grades. -
* To use settled teaching techniques
Different tests and homework are given regularly, independent work is encouraged, and good study habits are constantly instilled. The progress of every student is graded on a A-F scale.
-
* To inspire each student to positive self-concept
Our school strives to develop a sense of pride, citizenship and responsibility in students with the help of high behavioral standards that enable kids to achieve at good grades and levels.
OBJECTIVES
The following objectives are established by our school to accomplish the above stated goals:
-
Reading. We use the Houghton Mifflin reading program here: 1-3 grades students complete books at their teacher's discretion; 4-5 grades students are asked to read 1 book per month (at least) and complete a report (a written, oral, or electronic one) afterward.
-
Language Arts . Both written and oral languages are studied here. Students write in different genres, and all their works are corrected (if needed) to attain required skills.
-
Spelling. It is a part of our Language Arts program which is used to test competency and accuracy.
-
Mathematics . The basic math program is taught using such materials as the Scott Foresman Mathematics series and The Dale Seymour and Sadlier Mathematics.
-
The State Testing (STAR).  It is provided annually to check every student's academic growth and progress.
-
Homework . It is always given to instill study habits and encourage students' independent work. Parents help is always welcome for those students who can't work independently at the moment. All students are expected to follow a teacher's directions, to return their homework on time, and do this work neatly.
-
Class Size. A classroom of grade 2 students consists of 20 people usually; grades 4-5 students have 33 people in a classroom as a rule.
-
Communication. Parents and teachers interact regularly via phone calls, notes or newsletters. Each year our school holds parent-teacher conferences during the 1-st trimester, where parents are welcome to ask teachers all questions concerning their children's study and progress.
PHILOSOPHY
The Millikin Basics+ Elementary School provides a program which lets us teach education fundamentals to children using settled techniques in good educational environment. The teacher delivers all instructions to the whole class, and no volunteers or classroom aids are utilized during the learning process.
